The Story: The Sea Turtle's Long Walk Home
It was early morning on a beach in Florida. The sun came up slow and red over the water.
A small sea turtle named Shelly woke up in the sand. She was just one hour old. Around her, dozens of her brothers and sisters broke through their shells and looked around.
"Come!" one of them said. "We go to the water now."
Shelly looked at the ocean. It was so big. She felt afraid.
She went. She went slowly, one flipper at a time. A big wave came and pushed her forward. Then another wave came. Then another.
A bird flew over her head. A crab ran sideways across the sand. Shelly kept going.
By noon, she was in the deep water. By evening, she was far from the beach. She could not see it anymore.
"Where am I?" Shelly thought. But her body knew. She turned left, then right, then straight. She swam down deep and then up again. The ocean was her home now.
She was only one day old, but she felt like she had always been here.
