The Story: A New Home on Mars
The Martinez family was packing their bags. Tomorrow, they would fly to Mars.
Mom put three boxes into the cart. Dad carried a big bag. Maya held her plant, Fern.
"You're quiet today," Mom said.
"I don't want to go," Maya said. "Mars is too far."
Dad sat down next to her. "I felt the same way before I went to the moon," he said.
"You went to the moon?" Maya asked.
"When I was your age, yes. I sat on the ground and looked at it every night. Then I went there and made it feel small. The same will happen with Mars."
Maya looked at the big red dot in the sky. Mars glowed like a new star.
That night, she couldn't sleep. She thought about her bedroom, her friends, her school. Everything she knew was on Earth.
But when she woke up, she saw Earth through the window. Earth was small and blue and beautiful. She made it small in her mind. She fell asleep again and dreamed of red gardens and new friends.
