The Story: The Lighthouse Keeper's Daughter 🏠🌊
Every night, Maya climbed the 127 steps of Spiral Rock Lighthouse to light the lamp. Her father was the keeper, and tonight he had a fever.
"You are only twelve," her father said weakly. "You do not need to do this."
But Maya knew the ships out on the dark water needed that light. Without it, they could crash on the rocks below.
The wind was strong. The waves roared like hungry animals. Maya held the cold iron railing and climbed step by step.
At the top, she cleaned the great glass lens with a soft cloth. Then she lit the lamp. A warm golden light spun around and around, reaching far out over the sea.
Three ships saw the light that night. They changed their course and sailed safely into harbor.
When Maya came back down, her father was sitting up in bed. He had heard the ships' horns.
"You did it," he said. His eyes were proud. "You were my hands tonight."
Maya sat beside him. "The light helped them find their way," she said. "Now it is your turn to rest."
From that night on, Maya learned every part of the lighthouse. She learned when to check the oil, how to read the weather, and when to signal the ships. She became one of the youngest lighthouse keepers on the coast.
There are moments in life when someone must step forward and do what needs to be done — not because they are ready, but because others are counting on them.
